Workshop on Motion Capture for Music Performance

The workshop Motion Capture for Music Performance is intended as an event to exchange results by researchers carrying on projects related to movement analysis in music, including video analysis and annotation, MoCap using 3D trackers or sensor-based data acquisition.

09:20 - 10:40 Session I - MoCap for Music I: MoCap @ McGill. Case studies (20 minutes) on:

• MoCap of full body movements of wind and string instruments, by Delphine Bernardin and Marcelo Wanderley (Schulich School of Music);
• Constraints on finger movement measurement setups, by Werner Goebl and Caroline Palmer (Department of Psychology);
• Comparison of Goniometer data and MoCap data for walking patterns, by Ryan Ouckama and David Pearsall (Department of Kinesiology);
• MoCap of Respiratory Movements, by Pierpaolo Monaco and Isabelle Cossette (Schulich School of Music) - Visit of Isabelle's laboratory (9 camera BTS Smart IR System).

11:30 - 13:10 Session II - MoCap for Music II. Case studies (20 minutes) by:

• Investigating conductors' expressive gestures: quantitative motion analysis and continuous response ratings, by Clemens Woellner (Halle Wittenberg, Germany)

14:30 - 17:30 Session III - Data Analysis Using Video and MoCap Data.

Comparison of analysis methods using the same MoCap data set. Questions to be addressed include:

• What can be obtained from video analysis? Examples.
• What can be obtained from MoCap data? Examples.

09:00 - 12:00 Session IV - Hands-on MoCap Session

• Hands-on session with the Vicon System.

14:00 - 16:00 Session V - Data Exchange

• Data exchange between systems. Synchronization issues. Magnetic and Optical Trackers. Active vs. Passive optical systems.

16:30 - 18:30 Round Table: CIRMMT Research Axis II: Musical Gestures, Devices and Motion Capture (Room A832 - New Music Building, 8th floor - entrance through 555, Sherbrooke Street West)
