Project Description

Force-feedback devices can provide haptic feedback during interaction with physical models for sound synthesis. However, low-end devices may not always provide high-fidelity display of the acoustic characteristics of the model. For this project we designed an enhanced handle for the Phantom Omni Force-Feedback Device containing a vibration actuator intended to display the high-frequency portion of the synthesized forces. We performed measurements to show that this approach achieves a more faithful representation of the acoustic signal in the case of a bowing interaction, overcoming limitations in the device control and dynamics.
